Trip to Holland

Holland flag

I'm back from my short trip to Holland. We left Roma Ciampino on the 25th, toured some of the major central cities of the Netherlands and flew back from Eindhoven on March 5th.

We had fun and visited a lot of very nice cities: from the incredibly modern Rotterdam, to the smaller towns and finally the bustling Amsterdam. A summary of the tour and some photos follow... :)

23th February: Rotterdam

Holland outline We took off from Roma Ciampino at 2 o'clock and, after a quite comfortable Ryanair flight (if you don't count the pretty loud other italian tourists who were shouting at each other :)), we landed in Eindhoven. Unfortunately we didn't have time to visit the city and quickly took the train to Rotterdam.

That afternoon we were able to check in at our hostel (Room Rotterdam). In the following two days we went around sightseeing, visited the Boijmans Van Beuningen museum, went to Delfshaven and ate a lot of chinese food.

25th February: Delft, Den Haag

On our way to Den Haag (The Hague) we stopped at Delft, a very nice town which shows much more characteristic and typical architecture than Rotterdam.

That same day we arrived at Den Haag (Scheveningen, more exactly) and checked in at the Jorplace hostel. During the following two days we took our time to visit the city (walking from Scheveningen to Den Haag center can take some time, but is quite interesting), stopping at the Museon, the Gemeente Museum (tons of paintings, many by Mondrian, including my personal favorite "Windmill in sunlight"), the IMAX theater and finally visiting the palace of the inner city and the Binnenhof.

We also started eating take-away indonesian food like homeless people, sitting at the table of a closed restaurant on the dark and empty beach...

27th February: Amsterdam, Zaanse Schans, Haarlem

Even if apparently Amsterdam can be visited entirely in just three days, we stayed for 6 nights and every time we tried to reach Dam square we unexplicably found places and quarters we had never seen before. :) If you're visiting Amsterdam, I suggest you take the first day just to walk around and discover the city.

In the following days we visited the Historical museum of the city which contains interesting objects and reconstructions of Amsterdam's history. Luckily, the Van Gogh museum did host the temporary "Van Gogh and the colors of the night" exposition in those days (with the, rightfully, extremely popular "Starry Night").

On the 2nd March we went to Zaanse Schans to watch some wind mills and then to Haarlem, which is another beautiful city pretty close to Amsterdam with some remarkable churches (expecially the St. Bavo cathedral).

5th March: Eindhoven

That morning we woke up at 7, had a huge breakfast (it's free! :D) and took the train to Eindhoven. At six we arrived at Roma Ciampino: I had exactly 36 euro cents left in my pockets and nothing else. That's a perfectly planned vacation! :)
